The answers to the 20 questions on Dickens:
In 1812, the year Dickens was born…..
•	a) How many novels were published in Britain? 66
•	b) What was the literacy rate in Britain? Below 50%
•	c) What was his father’s job? Clerk at the Naval Pay Office
1.	In which towns did he spend his childhood? Portsmouth, London and Chatham
2.	How old was he when his family moved to London? 11
3.	What happened to him then? The following year he had to work at a blacking business, when he was only twelve.
4.	How old was Dickens when he started to work as a freelance reporter? 17
5.	What happened to him in 1834? He joined the reporting staff of the Morning Chronicle
6.	What penname did he use when he joined the reporting staff of the Morning Chronicle? Boz
7.	How old was Dickens when he published his first novel? And when he married? He was 24 and he married a few days later
8.	Was his first novel published before of after Victoria was crowned queen? How was it published? His first novel, the Pickwick Papers started as a monthly publication in March 1836 and finished in 1837. Victoria was crowned queen in 1837.
9. Which novel did Dickens start writing when his first novel was still running? Oliver Twist, in 1837, also in serialised form, like all the others.
10.	How many novels did he publish between his first and 1841? Can you name them? He published 4 including Oliver Twist and excluding The Pickwick Papers: Nicholas Nickleby (1838-9), The Old Curiosity Shop (1840-41), which reached 100,000 copies. He finished Barnaby Rudge in 1841.
11.	What did he do then? Are there any records of it? He went to the States with his wife full of expectations for the young republic but came back disillusioned. He recorded all his experiences in “American Notes” in 1842.
12.	When was his first setback in terms of novel-writing and how did it materialise? His following novel, Martin Chuzzlewit (1843-4) did not achieve the success of his previous novels.
13.	In which way is David Copperfield different fron Dickens’ previous novels? It was autobiographical.
14.	What was Household Words? What did it have in common with All the year Round? They were both magazines published by Dickens in the 1850s.
15. What were the main topics of Bleak House (1852-3), Hard Times (1854) and Little Dorrit (1855-7)? And those of A tale of two cities (1859), Great Expectations (1860-61) and Our Mutual Friend (1864-5)?
Bleak House focuses on the Court of Chancery, sanitary reform, slum clearance, orphans’ schools, the newly-formed Metropolitan Police Force, the emancipation of women… in brief, England at that time.
Hard Times also covers social issues together with the cold and loveless attitude Dickens associated with Utilitarianism.
Little Dorrit was a denunciation of the government and administration’s mismanagement of the Crimean War. Indeed, he considered “Nobody’s Fault” as a possible title for the novel.
A Tale of two cities deals with the French Revolution and the period of terror in France.
Great Expectations is narrated in the first person by Pip, the protagonist, as he reflects on the three stages of his “expectations”, starting on the Kentish marshes and eventually discovering the importance of human values.
Our Mutual Friend has several plots, the main one of which centres around John Harmor who returns to England as his father’s heir. The novel is a dense, comprehensive account of Victorian society, where materialistic values are paramount.
16.	What was the last novel he wrote? What was it about? The unfinished novel Edwin Drood and it was about his disappearance. Following the line set by his friend Wilkie Collins, we can only but guess possible endings to it. He started writing it in 1870.
17.	When did he die? In 1870.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH, CHARLES DICKENS, FOR ALL THE PLEASURE YOU HAVE GIVEN US, AND THE THOUGHTS YOU HAVE PROVOKED.

Thank you very much Maria! Sorry I have this a bit quiet, but I'm busy with the corrections. I'll try and get the others to cooperate too. Actually I was working on multilingual competence during the holidays and have found some other documents on the same line. Will be uploading something on the ELP for teachers
